Emma Todd, Administrator Chance, fate, call it what you will; there's definitely something in it. In 2003, I had taken redundancy from an insurance company to embark on a two-year college course. I'd thought about it for a long time, but knew it was the right decision. I'd worked there long enough and I needed some 'me time'. But 'me time' costs money, so I hoped to get some temping work, and the agency said: "Do you fancy working at an ethical IFA?".
I had worked in insurance companies long enough to know something about where they put their money, so I was already a convert to ethical investment. It's the natural extension of who I am. I recycle, give to charity, and care about the world we live in, so why not make my money do some good as well? Working with an ethical IFA just completes the picture.
We're often defined by what we do, not who we are. I've travelled a bit and finally made my home in Edinburgh with my husband George and Charlie my cat. Life's given me lots of experiences, but the satisfying 'what I do’ bit had always eluded me. Until now. The temping job gradually extended, until I made myself indispensable and Julian made it permanent. Working in a small business was quite a step change for me - no comfort zone and a need to wear many hats, but how refreshing. I look after the admin for ethicalfutures and try to keep the boys in order. I really enjoy getting to know our clients and even trying to sort out the insurance companies when they don’t quite get it right. It’s generally me that answers the phone, so I look forward to hopefully speaking to you soon.
